Boekenhoutskloof Syrah Porseleinberg 750ml

Named for the low-running spine of hills that comes out of Riebeek Kasteel, the Porseleinberg project is extreme viticulture. With large jagged pieces of schist sticking out of the ground and only 18 inches of annual rainfall, it hasn’t been easy to get a vineyard established on this windblown spot, but the early signs of quality are there and Kent is happy to have put down roots. Most of the fruit from Porseleinberg will be used for the Boekenhoutskloof and Chocolate Block labels, but the cream of the production will go into the estate’s own bottling. It’s a Syrah fermented with the stems in concrete vats, then aged in concrete eggs and large wooden foudres, mimicking the traditional techniques used in the Rhone Valley, whose wines Kent loves. Review Boekenhoutskloof has certainly changed in terms of style in recent vintages, for the better in my opinion, as there were occasions when I felt that the wines were too heavy, a little over-egged in the winery with long periods in oak. Nowhere is that change more evident than in the hugely successful “The Chocolate Block”, whose source has relocated from various regions to only Swartland. Producer Boekenhoutskloof was established in 1776. Located in the furthest corner of the beautiful Franschhoek valley, the farm’s name means ”ravine of the Boekenhout” (pronounced Book-n-Howed). Boekenhout is an indigenous Cape Beech tree greatly prized for furniture making. In 1993 the farm and homestead was bought and restored and a new vineyard planting programme was established that now includes Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Grenache, Semillon and Viognier.
