We are proud to present our series of organic Italian wines. During surf-inspired adventures in Italy with surfer-artist-environmentalist Chris Del Moro, Filmmaker Jason Baffa was fortunate enough to meet his good friend, surfer, winemaker & art-patron, Piergiorgio Castellani. The Castellani family has been passionately making Tuscan Wines for five generations (over one-hundred years). Piergiorgio attributes the fantastic flavor of Tuscan wines to the rich sea-floor minerality of the Italian soil, a minerality established millions of years ago when the region was submerged deep beneath the Mediterranean. As surfers, the group finds this a fun connection between winemaking and the sea. In collaboration with the Castellani Family, we introduce Estate Harvested, organically grown wines from Italy under the label, ZIOBAFFA. These wines are made with Tuscan expertise in concert with a modern eco-friendly ethos. The ZIOBAFFA wines are crafted with a bio-dynamic and sustainable focus through the masterful hands of Piergiorgio Castellani. The grapes are organically produced, which we think makes the wine better for the environment and easier on your system. In the coming months, we hope to build the ZIOBAFFA wine portfolio and we are beginning with an exciting endeavor. . . In conjunction with the release of the film, ”Bella Vita,” Piergiorgio, Chris and Jason would like to share two new wines from ZIOBAFFA. We call them ”The Filmmaker’s Edition. ” Inspired by their travels surfing Italy, the label design is the original, limited edition artwork of Chris Del Moro and highlights a hand-drawn boot with tallowed Mediterranean waves. It is printed on FSC certified paper and affixed with a bio-friendly glue, minimizing the toxicity of the label making process. With a focus on sustainable, zero-waste production and environmentally friendly bottling, including recycled materials and the revolutionary Helix® re-useable cork closure, these wines are a modern take on an old-world-tradition. Wine is a way of life in Italy. Enjoyed during lunch and dinner, it is served with food as part of the dining experience. It is shared amongst family and friends, celebrating the simple beauty of community. Open a bottle of ZIOBAFFA with close family and friends and enjoy ”la belleza d’ Italia. ”
Wine maker notes
ZIOBAFFA Pinot Grigio is carefully produced using traditional methods and modern equipment. After gentle pressing of the grapes and clarification of the must, primary fermentation takes place in temperature controlled stainless steel vats at 16°C (60°F) for 15 days. After fermentation is complete, the wine is stored at 17-18°C (63°F) until bottling. Bottled and labeled with bio-safe material. Featuring the new Helix re-usable cork seal.

Filmmaker Jason Baffa has been fortunate enough to travel the globe with his friends and a film-camera creating moving pictures about their love for surfing. The films, ”Singlefin: yellow,” ”One California Day” and the newly released and award winning, ”Bella Vita,” embrace the inspired life of the care-free surfing sub-culture. During the first days of filmmaking in Italy with surfer-environmentalist, Chris Del Moro and winemaker, Piergiorgio Castellani on ”Bella Vita,” Baffa’s passion for good food, thirst-quenching libation and a few late-night practical jokes, inspired the local crew of surfers to nick-name him, Zio Baffa (Uncle Baffa). It is in the spirit of Zio Baffa (that somewhat off-beat fun-loving uncle we all may have) that we bring to you some of our favorite things to enjoy. As with the filmmaking endeavors, ZIOBAFFA products take pride in authenticity with an attention to detail and quality. Handmade by artisans with a focus on traditional and organic production, these are the things we keep going back to places like Italy for. . . Now, we are bringing them to you.

Over 100 years. The Castellani’s business was established in Montecalvoli at the end of the 19th century as Alfred, long-standing wine grower, decides to start bottling and selling his wine. In 1903 the business is officially registered at the Chamber of Commerce in Pisa. Alfredo’s son, Duilio, together with his brother Mario starts off the firm’s expansion period. A meticulous and intent man, Duilio takes an active part in every working stage. The most important vineyard is the one in Santa Lucia, in the fertile Arno Valley, where a sprightly and “fit for ageing” red wine is produced and bottled in typical straw-covered flasks, gaining the interest of transalpine markets. One day in the little agricultural village of Montecalvoli comes a railway wagon drawn by a potent lorry. The maker of this miracle is Giorgio, Duilio’s son, determined and ambitious man, who starts export on a large scale. The 1966 flood causes great damage to the Montecalvoli winery. It is then decided to temporarily transfer the business to the Burchino Estate, on the hills of Terricciola. Giorgio’s brother, Roberto, brilliant journalist at the newspaper “Il Giornale del Mattino” in Florence rushes to help shovelling mud away from the family’s winery. He then stays and contributes to the firm’s evolution. A well-read and cosmopolitan man, Roberto starts a pioneer undertaking on far-away markets, becoming one of the advocates of Chianti’s international success. The purchase of Poggio al Casone vineyard coincides with the extension of the winery at the Travalda Estate in Santa Lucia. During the night of 1982 New Year’s Day a fire burns almost completely down the firm’s premises. It seems to be the end. But within few months the Castellani brothers purchase the Campomaggio Estate and, thanks to the contribution of Piergiorgio, Roberto’s son, the business gathers strength. Wine-growing and technological researches are furthered clever specialists such as young oenologist Sabino Russo and the agronomist Federico Comassi are appointed. Today this centenarian firm pursues very enthusiastically the aim of producing wines, which are the expression of one of the greatest oenological regions of the world: Tuscany.
