Patrón was founded in 1989 by John Paul DeJoria — co-founder of Paul Mitchell — and Martin Crowley, with a single mission: to create the world's first ultra-premium 100% agave tequila at a time when tequila meant cheap shots and bad hangovers. Partnering with master distiller Francisco Alcaraz in the highlands of Jalisco, they built a production process around traditional tahona stone crushing, slow-cooked Blue Weber agave, and small-batch copper pot distillation — and priced it at $37 a bottle when nothing else came close. The iconic hand-blown glass bottle, inspired by Mexican artisan craftsmanship and numbered by hand, became as recognisable as what was inside it. Now produced at Hacienda Patrón in Atotonilco El Alto, Jalisco and owned by Bacardi since 2018, Patrón remains one of the world's best-selling premium tequilas.
